Creating a System

Prevention Rx is a healthcare prevention system launched by NC Prevention Partners in 2005.  It was designed to assist providers with integrating preventive healthcare information consistently and efficiently into each and every patient encounter.  The Prevention Rx system relies upon a series of Starting the Conversation (STC) tools to address a variety of important preventive healthcare topics.  The original STCs dealt with nutrition, physical activity, and quitting tobacco.  More recent additions include tools that assist providers with management of hypertension and cholesterol.

Although the STC tools were originally designed for use in clinics and healthcare provider offices, the Prevention Rx system is being adapted for use by hospitals in their inpatient as well as outpatient facilities.  As an important facet of the Healthy Hospital Initiative, the tobacco cessation STC is the first tool to be customized for hospital use.
By systematically using this tool, anyone in the hospital can “start a conversation” about quitting tobacco and provide referrals for additional help.  Because your employees are your most valuable asset and are critical to the success of your tobacco-free campus policy, NC Prevention Partners has adapted a tobacco cessation tool especially for them.
